Lätäseno

The permit area 1550 Lätäseno will be removed in spring 2024. As of April, it will be replaced by three new angling permit areas: 1423 Lätäseno, 1426 Toriseno and 1432 Poroeno. The pages for the new areas will be published in March.

Permits for 2024 become available on 9 April 2024 at 9 a.m.

Lätäseno originates in the fell streams of the Käsivarsi wilderness area, which join together to form the great rivers of the region. For example, the Rommaeno, Toriseno and Poroeno rivers all drain into Lätäseno, which is the largest tributary of Muonionjoki River. The Lätäseno fishing area consists of Lätäseno, Poroeno and Toriseno rivers. Salmon migrating back to Lätäseno can travel up distances to 500 km. The area is well known for large grayling and whitefish, and sea trout also migrate to Lätäseno.

The area is ideal for traditional casting, but trolling from a rowboat is also possible. Lätäseno is accessible on foot or by boat, bike or airplane. A permit for Lätäseno allows fishing on more than 100 km of river running through open fells and landscape below the tree line.

Permit terms

Permit terms for the area

1.6.–31.8.

Permit area Lätäseno 1550 includes Lätäseno between Vähäkurkkio and Lake Porojärvi and also Toriseno until Vuontisjokisuu. The lower course of Lätäseno has some fishing restrictions and private water areas which are not part of the permit area. You can check the water area borders of the permit area on the target map available on this page.

The permit does not grant you the right to fish in other waters surrounding Lätäseno. Those waters belong to a permit area called Enontekiö Wilderness 1551.

Catch quotas

The maximum number of fish that an angler may catch is indicated in the table below:

Fish Species maximum catch in 24 hours
Salmon or trout 1 fish
Grayling or whitefish 3 fish

There is no fishing quota limit for other fish species.

Catch surveys are sent to fishers after the permit expires. All caught and released fish must also be reported.

Catch sizes and protection periods

The following catch sizes and protection periods for fish species are in effect for this permit area:

Fish species Catch size Protection period
Trout At least 50 cm 1.9.–30.11.*
Grayling At least 35 cm No protection period in this permit area
Salmon At least 60 cm 1.9.–30.11.*

* During the protection period of trout and salmon fishing is not allowed in the permit area.

Metsähallitus recommends anglers to release all trout back into the water.

Fishers must observe the catch sizes and protection periods mandated in the Fishing Decree for other fish species.

Water temperature has a significant impact on the survival of salmonids after they are released. When water temperatures approach +20 °C, you should use judgement before you decide to fish for salmonids. In waters warmer than this, fishing for salmonids should be avoided. In such situations, it is advisable to focus on species that are more resistant to heat, such as zander, pike and perch. See guidelines for responsible fishing.
