The sale of fishing permits for Northern Lapland begins

Thu May 16 11:00:00 2019

The eagerly anticipated sale of fishing permits for Utsjoki, Inari, and Enontekiö begins next week. Residents can purchase their seasonal permits for 40 euros from Wednesday, May 22 9:00 onwards from nature and visitor centres. The permit allows lure fishing in rivers in the municipality. Non-residents can begin buying location-specific daily permits from Tuesday, May 21 at 9:00 onwards from the Eräluvat online shop or from service number +358 20 69 2424.

The fishing season begins on June 1 on most rivers. The beginning of sales has been delayed this year. Parliament decided on the changes to the Fishing Act in March, after which Metsähallitus negotiated fishing arrangements with the residents and the Sámi Parliament.

After this Metsähallitus could give a new quota that determined the maximum number of fishing permits. The sales can begin only after the appeal period has passed and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has confirmed the price of the resident permits for rivers. The price is 40 euros.

From Wednesday onwards, the permanent residents of Utsjoki, Inari, or Enontekiö can purchase a seasonal permit for rivers that are salmon or trout migration areas. The permit is free for young people under the age of 18. There is no quota for the number of permits, so all the residents can purchase it. Residents can purchase their seasonal permit from the Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida, the Metsähallitus customer service points in Ivalo, from Kiehinen at Saariselkä, and from the Fell-Lapland Visitor Centre in Enontekiö.

Non-residents can purchase location daily permits for rivers in Northern Lapland. These permits have a quota. These permits can be purchased from May 21 at 9:00 onwards from the Eräluvat.fi online shop or from service number +358 20 69 2424.

The free fishing permit for residents in Utsjoki, Inari, and Enontekiö is still valid on state-owned waters that are other areas than salmon or trout migration areas. The free permit for other areas is limited to lure and trap fishing. The river permit subject to a fee is limited to lure fishing.

All areas that are subject to permits can be viewed in the Metsähallitus’ Eräluvat.fi website. Additionally, Metsähallitus publishes a special edition of Tuikki magazine on fishing in Northern Lapland.
