Fishing suspended at some destinations due to warm water temperatures – check the status of fishing sites

The warm summer weather is rapidly increasing water temperatures. Warm water conditions are stressful for salmonid fish, and they may not recover after being released. Metsähallitus therefore recommends avoiding salmonid fishing in waters where temperatures exceed 21°C. At present, fishing has been completely suspended at Kotala Rapids, Konnuskoski, Karvionkoski, Langinkoski and Latokartanonkoski. The situation will be reviewed again on Monday, 20 July.

This news item will be updated.

Fishing permits cannot currently be purchased for the closed destinations. Permit sales may resume once water temperatures have fallen sufficiently. The situation is assessed every Monday, when a decision is made on whether the suspension of permit sales should continue. Information on closed and reopened destinations will be updated in this news item.

At present, permits are not being sold for the following permit areas (updated 13 July 2026):

  • Kotala Rapids, 6550
  • Konnuskoski, 7591
  • Karvionkoski, 7561
  • Latokartanonkoski, 7594
  • Langinkoski, 7581

The destinations where permit sales have been suspended are migratory fish waters where temperatures have risen significantly and do not appear to be decreasing. Brown trout, salmon and other salmonids, such as Arctic char and grayling, tolerate heat poorly and recover especially poorly after catch-and-release. For this reason, fishing should be avoided at sites where anglers may catch undersized or protected fish that must be released.

Purchased permits may be cancelled

Although permit sales have been suspended, permits that have already been purchased will not be cancelled automatically. Metsähallitus cannot unilaterally cancel permits that have already been paid for without the permit holder’s consent.

Anglers may choose one of the following options:

  • A paid permit may be cancelled in full and refunded. The cancellation must be made before the permit validity period begins by contacting Metsähallitus Eräluvat Customer Service: +358 20 69 2424 (weekdays 9:00–15:00, local call/mobile charge) or eraluvat@metsa.fi. For group permits, only the person who purchased the permits may request cancellation, and all permits in the group booking will be cancelled at the same time.
  • Fishing may still be carried out with a paid permit if the permit holder so wishes. However, this is not recommended.

An unpaid permit may be cancelled by the customer in the Eraluvat.fi service.

Focus fishing on species other than salmonids elsewhere as well

Different fish species tolerate high temperatures differently. Some species cope well even in warm water. These include roach, pike-perch (zander), perch, pike, tench and crucian carp.

If you are uncertain about the water temperature, the safest approach is to target species that tolerate higher temperatures better or species that will be retained as catch in any case. An unpaid permit can also be moved to a cooler period.

Many Metsähallitus fishing destinations have temperature gauges that anglers can use to monitor water temperatures themselves. The gauges can be viewed at map.sensormonitor.fi.
