Lake Kesänkijärvi 2571

Lake Kesänkijärvi is nestled in the heart of the magnificent Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. The lake is easily accessible and suitable for example for family trips. You can park your car right next to the lake, and all services of Äkäslompolo village are nearby.

Fishing and water management in Kesänkijärvi to change in 2023

Metsähallitus and the Äkäslompolo water area partnership have decided to stop planting rainbow trout at Kesänkijärvi. The planting activities came to a natural end as the delivery agreement of the rainbow trout to Kesänkijärvi ended. The end to the planting activities was also supported by the new official recommendations on species to be planted and the TRIWA Life project that will start in the area. The project’s main target is to improve the habitats of migratory fish in the whole Tornio-Muonionjoki water area and decrease the amount of obstacles to migration. Planting rainbow trout in Kesänkijärvi has required setting up a fish barrier to ensure that the fish stay in the area; now the current fish barrier downriver has come to the end of its useful life. After rainbow trout has been fished out at the site, the fish barrier can be dismantled which will open kilometres of migration routes to the upper course waters of Kesänkijärvi for migratory fish.

The sale of permits for Kesänkijärvi will change on 15 May when the price of the fishing permit will decrease to zero EUR. Even though the permit is free of charge, it has to be obtained before fishing. The ELY Centre has established a valid prohibition on hook-and-line, ice and lure fishing on Kesänkijärvi until 2025. The prohibition means that it is not allowed to fish from the lake without the permission of the owner of the water area.
