The Karvionkoski Rapids, roaring between the large route waters of Suvasvesi and Kermajärvi, are 1.5 kilometres of pure angling bliss. Most of the permit area consists of evenly flowing waters, but one can also experience the thrill of white waters by the channel of Karvio. Karvionkoski is 50 km away from Varkaus and 70 km away from Joensuu.
The fish stocks at Karvionkoski are based on both fry stockings and natural reproduction. At Karvionkoski, a lucky angler has the chance to catch a large brown or freshwater trout that has migrated into the lakes.
Protection periods have been implemented to guard the spawning of trout and salmon and the pressure on naturally born migratory fish is reduced by making the release of such fish mandatory.

Permit terms for the area1.1–31.8. and 1.12.–31.12.
What does the permit entitle the holder to
All fishing in the area requires the Karvionkoski angling permit 7561. Hook and line fishing and ice fishing are prohibited in rapids and running waters where there are migratory fish routes regardless of whether the person has an angling permit or not.
Karvionkoski angling permit grants the right for lure fishing with lure, fly or jig.
The angling permit for Southern Finland 7413 issued by Metsähallitus does not grant the right to fish in the waters of this permit area.
Fishing gear and bait
An angler may use one (1) rod with one line. The rod must be in the angler’s hand or within reach at all times (no more than 2 metres away). The rod may not be left alone for fishing.
When trolling from a rowboat, an angler can use a maximum of two (2) rods, each of them with one line.
A lure can have a maximum of three hooks, in other words,
Only barbless hooks are permitted.
The use of bait paste, silicone balls or natural baits, such as grubs, worms, shrimp or bait fish, is prohibited.
Fishing from a boat is only permitted in the areas above and below the rapids designated on the map. However, fishing from a motorboat is prohibited even in these areas.
Catch quotas and catch reports
The maximum number of fish that an angler may catch is indicated in the table below:
|permit validity||Maximum catch|
|6 hours||1 salmonid without adipose fin|
|12 hours||1 salmonid without adipose fin|
|24 hours||2 salmonids without adipose fin of which 1 may be landlocked salmon without adipose fin|
In this quota table, salmonid means brown trout and landlocked salmon. There is no fishing quota limit for other fish species.
The 24-hour catch quota cannot be increasing by purchasing several permits for the same 24-hour period. For example, three 6-hour permits does not entitle the permit holder to catch three brown trout within a 24-hour period.
Starting in 2020, catch reports for this permit area are submitted by answering a fishing survey conducted by Metsähallitus and Natural Resources Institute Finland. You can access the survey via your Eräluvat web shop customer account (section Order history). You will also receive a reminder via email.
Also all caught and released fish must be reported, especially the landlocked salmons and brown trouts with adipose fins.
