Arrival instructions

Hiking

  • The camp area is located right next to Kaakkurinkierros hiking trail.

By Publinc Transportation

By Car

  • Nearest parking areas is Saarijärvi parking area (approximately 1,5 kms to Valkjärvi, access to the group camp is by trails, the road leading to the group camp is closed with a barrier), Kuismantie 990, Kouvola (Road 368). Space for approximately 60 cars. During the winter maintenance period, the parking area may be smaller.

  • The renter of the area may drive one vehicle to the Valkjärvi reservation camp area if needed. The vehicle must stay in the campsite for the duration of the reservation and must not be used anywhere other than on the road section between the Saarijärvi boom and the campsite. Apply for the vehicle permit well in advance, at the latest 5 days before the start of the lease period. You can send a free-form application with a short explanation to Saimaa(at)metsa.fi.    Please note that depending on the winter conditions, the frost heave may last up to mid-May in the spring and prevent you from reaching the campsite. The last forest road section leading to Valkjärvi (approx. 300 m) does not have winter maintenance.

Yard

  • Campfire site and a picnic table.

  • Locked woodshed, firewood and an axe.

  • A traditional cellar.

  • A pier.

  • A cooking and dishwashing shelter.

  • A compost.

  • An accessible outhouse (non-compostable), please bring own toilet paper.

Keys

The key is in a key cabinet on the hut wall. The cabinet is protected with a code. Instructions and the code are sent to you by e-mail after the payment.

Always keep the keys inside the key box, so they won’t get lost or locked inside the hut.

Facilities

Heating and lighting

  • A wood-heated stove in the hut. Please use firewood sparingly. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.

  • We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.

Cooking

  • A wood-heated stove in the hut.

  • Coffee and tea pots.

  • Five pots and pan for stove and for campfire.

  • Buckets and canisters for clean and waste water and dish washing.

Drinking water

  • Drinking water well is located right next to the yard.

  • Water is drinkable, but it has strong odour and colour nuisances. Other well in Saarijärvi.

Staying overnight

  • 1,5 hectare forrest yard defined by fences is in tenants use and suitable for camping.

  • If needed, it is allowed to sleep inside: maximum 5 persons at the balcony and 25 persons at the floor on tent mattresses.

Toilet

There is a toilet with suction emptying. Putting leftovers or litter into the toilet is prohibited.

Please bring your own toilet paper.

Waste disposal

There are no waste containers by the cabin. Visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.

Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (nationalparks.fi).

A compost for food scraps and other bio-degradable waste.

Other things to keep in mind

  • Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.

  • In the Valkjärvi yard area, mobile phone coverage is best in the field between the toilets and the woodshed.

  • There are fire alarms at wilderness huts, but we recommend to bring a 9 V battery and/or your own travel fire alarm with you.

  • Read more about the area and its current information at Nationalparks.fi.
