Bookings for rental huts for 2027 open on May 5th at Eraluvat.fi
Bookings of rental and shared rental huts, as well as other sites available for booking for 2027, will open on Tuesday May 5th 2026 at 9:00am on Eraluvat.fi.
Palovartija House rental hut is originally built in 1845 and last renovated in 2005. It is located on a high esker ridge in the beautiful national landscape of Punkaharju. Well-stocked Lake Pihlajavesi is right next to the hut at the foot of a steep esker, and there is also a pond, bunkhouse (sleeps 4), waterfront sauna and root cellar on the grounds. The Palovartija House serves sometimes as a shepherd's hut.
Visitors to Palovartija House can easily explore the National landscape, its numerous trails and sights of Punkaharju.
A rental hut is a place for an overnight stay that can be rented for only your use.
Make all reservations under the same order if you book several huts or other sites for the same trip. According to the reservation terms, the minimum refundable amount per order is €30.
Make reservations under separate orders if you book huts or other sites for several different trips. Managing separate reservations is easier, and you will receive a separate due date for each one, 14 days before the start of the reservation.
The reservation day for shared rental huts, rental huts and other rental structures begins at 2 pm and ends at 12 noon.
Keep the order confirmation of your paid reservation with you. Check the information related to keys in the "Keys" section (located halfway down the page).

A foreign company can place an order in the company's name only as an unregistered customer.
When a company regularly takes its customers to destinations with hiking infrastructure maintained by Metsähallitus, it must have a cooperation agreement. Read more in the information bank for entrepreneurs.
Minimum length of reservation is 2 nights.
The rate does not include the final cleaning fee.

Palovartija House is located on the shore of Lake Pihlajavesi, close to ship traffic. The hut can be reached by car from Punkaharjun harjutie. There is parking space for a few cars on the hut grounds.
Palovartija House can be reached by car on highway 14; 32 km from Savonlinna and 90 km from Imatra. The hut is 370 km from Helsinki. When driving in from the south, turn onto Punkaharjun harjutie 4792, drive another 1.2 km, and then turn left at the address sign 124 onto the narrow cottage road, which runs up the ridge. The hut is approximately 200 metres from Harjutie.
Punkaharju can also be easily reached using public transportation. Palovartija is 2,3 km away from Punkaharju railway station.
Buses (matkahuolto.fi) run regularly from both Savonlinna and Imatra.
A railbus (vr.fi) stops several times a day at the Punkaharju village, Retretti and Lusto stops.
Palovartija House can easily be reached by boat from the fairways on Lake Pihlajavesi and Lake Puruvesi. There is no pier on the shore.

The wood-burning waterfront sauna is located at the foot of the hill, on the shore of an esker pond. There is a campfire site next to the sauna. Firewood can be found in the shed.
Root cellar and dry-toilet in the yard.
Stairs lead from the hut down to the Lake Pihlajavesi shore, where there is no pier.
There is a rowboat at the guests’ disposal on the shore of Lake Pihlajavesi.
There are fences in the yard area, as shepherd weeks are also occasionally organised in Palovartija.
Pitching tents in the yard is not allowed.
The yard and its buildings are for the exclusive use of the renter.
The key is in a key code box on the site's wall. The box is protected with a code. Instructions and the code are sent to you by e-mail after the payment.
Take lock de-icer with you just in case the box's lid is stuck due to frost. Metsähallitus does not have maintenance on site.
Electric heating only in the main building. The hut’s wood-burning baking oven and wood-burning stove are not in use.
The hut also has electric lighting.
Electric cooker and refrigerator, kitchen utensils and dishware for eight.
The main building has a water supply, but it is recommended to boil the water before use.
In the main building, the bedroom has a double bed and there is a pull-out sofa in the main room. The bunkhouse has bunks for four. There are pillows, blankets and mattresses.
Please bring your own linen or a sleeping bag and towel.

There is a dry toilet near the site. Please bring your own toilet paper.
There are waste containers by the site but visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.
Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (luontoon.fi).
There is a collection container for mixed waste at the shed.
There are collection containers for sorted waste (cardboard, metal, glass, plastic, paper) in the centre of Punkaharju, near the S-market store.
You can hear cars and the railbus on the grounds.
There are no accessible services in the hut. The elevation difference between the house, the sauna and the campfire site is significant.
Please clean the hut before you leave.
Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.
Huts are equipped with smoke detectors, but we recommend that you bring your own smoke detector. An increasing number of huts have smoke detectors with long-life batteries that cannot be replaced by visitors. The battery is replaced by the hut maintenance staff.
Each user of the site is responsible for keeping the site clean. The site does not have regular maintenance.
Please note that Metsähallitus sites are wilderness‑like and modest, and the indoor areas may contain, for example, insects, rodents, and their droppings.
