Guohkkemašjávri / Kuohkimajärvi shared rental hut is a demanding wilderness destination. Navigation skills are needed to get to the hut. The hut is not accessible during the thaw.

The hut is located in Malla Strict Nature Reserve, along the Nordkalott Trail, near the borders of three countries, to the north of Lake Kuohkimajärvi.

In winter, the hut can be reached by skiing. The skiing season is typically from March to April.

In summer, the recommended time for hiking the trail is from early July to early September. During snow-free periods, movement within Malla Strict Nature Reserve is allowed only on marked trails. In the summer, the hiking distance to the hut can be shortened by taking a boat trip to Koltalahti on the Swedish side, located 3.5 km from the hut.

A shared rental hut is a reservable place for an overnight stay where you can book a paid bed for 1–2 nights.

Tips for a smooth booking

Make all reservations under the same order if you book several huts or other sites for the same trip. According to the reservation terms, the minimum refundable amount per order is €30.
Make reservations under separate orders if you book huts or other sites for several different trips. Managing separate reservations is easier, and you will receive a separate due date for each one, 14 days before the start of the reservation.

Notes for all bookers

The reservation day for shared rental huts and rental huts begins at 2 pm and ends at 12 noon.
Keep the order confirmation of your paid reservation with you. Check the information related to keys in the "Keys" section (located halfway down the page).

Notes for corporate customers

A foreign company can place an order in the company's name only as an unregistered customer.
When a company regularly takes its customers to destinations with hiking infrastructure maintained by Metsähallitus, it must have a cooperation agreement. Read more in the information bank for entrepreneurs.
Reservable huts are meant for those travelling by foot, skis or other means of physical movement (not motorized vehicles).
Hiking and skiing groups of partner entrepreneurs can book reservation huts year-round with the following restrictions
- 5 groups during the summer season from June 1st to October 31st
- 5 groups during the winter season from November 1st to May 30th

During the snow-free season, moving in the Malla Strict Nature Reserve is allowed only on foot on the marked trail.

Yard

There is a dry toilet, a wood shed, and an open wilderness hut for 6 persons on the grounds.
The terrain is rocky in places, but there are a few campsites near the hut.

Keys

The key is in a key code box on the site's wall. The box is protected with a code. Instructions and the code are sent to you by e-mail after the payment.
Take lock de-icer with you just in case the box's lid is stuck due to frost. Metsähallitus does not have maintenance on site.

Facilities

Heating and lighting

The hut has a stove and firewood for heating. Please use firewood sparingly. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.
The hut has no electricity. We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.

Cooking

A gas stove.
Basic cookware (pot, frying pan, coffee pot).

Drinking water

There is no running water in the hut.
It is recommended to boil water from natural sources before consumption. Water quality is not tested. Drink water taken directly from nature at your own risk.

Staying overnight

Bunk beds with mattresses, pillows and blankets.
Please bring your own linen or a sleeping bag.
A shared rental hut is a shared overnight accommodation where hikers sleep in the same space, usually shoulder-to-shoulder in bunk beds.

Toilet

There is a dry toilet near the site. Please bring your own toilet paper.

Waste disposal

There are no waste containers by the site. Visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.

Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (luontoon.fi).

Other things to keep in mind

Read the rules of the Malla Strict Nature Reserve (nationalparks.fi) in advance; Everyman's Rights do not apply in the reserve.
Especially for those hiking with dogs, it is important to note that Koltalahti is located on the Swedish side. Check the import and export regulations for dogs on the Finnish Food Authority's website (ruokavirasto.fi).
In Norway, about 3 kilometers from the Three-Country Cairn, there is a locked cabin called Goldahytta, maintained by the Norwegian Trekking Association (www.dnt.no, in English)
The firewood should only be used for heating the huts. Making campfires outdoors is prohibited if the hut does not have an official campfire site.
Please clean the hut before you leave.

Safety

Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.
There are fire alarms at wilderness huts, but we recommend to bring a 9 V battery and/or your own travel fire alarm with you.

Instructions for the user of the site

Each user of the site is responsible for keeping the site clean. The site does not have regular maintenance.
Please note that Metsähallitus sites are wilderness‑like and modest, and the indoor areas may contain, for example, insects, rodents, and their droppings.
