In the beautiful North Savonian country town of Maaninka, by the Siilinjärvi-Viitasaari road, lies the Viannankoski Rapids permit area. Viannankoski is a relatively short, easy to fish rapids section rich in fish and nestled in a cultural landscape.
The most sought-after target species are rainbow trout, which is planted in the river catch-sized, and pike-perch, which is very abundant especially around midsummer. Thrilling fishing experiences are also provided by the large ides that like to spend their days in the running water and the rarer eels, special guests who sometimes wander into the rapids.

The cool summer has turned into a heatwave, and water temperatures are rising rapidly. Warm waters are stressful for salmonids, and they may not recover after being released. Metsähallitus therefore recommends avoiding fishing for salmonids and instead targeting species that tolerate heat better.

Not all information on angling permit areas has yet been translated into English and Swedish on the renewed Eräluvat.fi service. For this reason, not all angling permits can yet be purchased as a self-service. However, the permits can be purchased through Eräluvat customer service.
The need for an angling permit depends on the type of waterbody and how many rods and lures you will use.
In this permit area, you will need an angling permit when lure fishing in sections with rapids and running water. You will also be required to pay the fisheries management fee, unless you are under 18 years of age, over 70 years of age, or are 65 years of age or older as of 31 December 2023.
If you are lure fishing with only one rod and lure in still waters, such as river pools, payment of the fisheries management fee is sufficient. You will also require an angling permit when fishing with multiple rods or lures.
Hook and line fishing and ice fishing are fully prohibited in running and rapids sections of waters with migratory fish stocks (i.e. also this permit area). In still waters, hook and line fishing and ice fishing are permitted free of charge with one rod. If you are hook and line fishing or ice fishing with more than one rod, you are required to purchase an angling permit and pay the fisheries management fee.
Please note that the Viannankoski angling permit area practically comprises of flowing water only.

Fishing from a boat, regulating dam, highway bridge, fish ladder (or its bank) is prohibited. Fishing from the western bank of the rapids is also prohibited.
Wading from the western bank is also prohibited, as is crossing the central line of the rapids by wading from the eastern bank below the road bridge (see the PDF map).
The prohibition of fishing and wading on the western shore safeguards fish migrations along the fish passes.
There is lean-to shelter and campfire site in the area.
Waters in Viannankoski are stocked with catch-sized rainbow trout in the summer and autumn.
Because of the regulation of water in Lake Onkivesi, the discharge in the rapids varies greatly. Current information on the water discharge levels in Viannankoski may be found here (ymparisto.fi, in Finnish).
Safe to wade in when discharge is less than 25 m³/s
Good fishing conditions when discharge is 10–50 m³/s.
Difficult fishing conditions when discharge is less than 10 m³/s tai more than 50 m³/s.
