Exceptions to customer service hours in February
The hut sales and customer service of Metsähallitus Wildlife & Parks will be exceptionally closed February 6. At other times, customer service is open on weekdays from 9 AM to 3 PM.
Härkätunturi shared rental hut is located close to the border of the municipalities of Salla and Savukoski, in Tuntsa Wilderness Area, between Härkätunturi Fell and Härkätunturinmurustat Fell, along the UKK Trail (summer trail). In winter there is no marked trail to the hut. In the same building there is an open wilderness hut. In the yard, there is a sauna (used by both those staying at the open wilderness hut and those at the shared rental hut), a woodshed, and a dry toilet.
A shared rental hut is a reservable place for an overnight stay where you can book a paid bed for 1–2 nights.
Creating a user account is worthwhile. As a logged-in customer, you do not need to pay for your reservation immediately. You can also cancel unpaid reservations yourself. Create a user account.
Tip: If you reserve huts for multiple trips, make separate orders for each trip. This way, you can choose to pay for each trip's reservation only 14 days before the start of the reservation.
Ensure a safe trip to the hut. Read the checklist.
The reservation day for shared rental huts and rental huts begins at 2 pm and ends at 12 noon.
Keep the order confirmation of your paid reservation with you. Check the information related to keys in the "Keys" section (located halfway down the page).
By following the hut etiquette, you ensure that the use of hut is smooth. Learn about the hut etiquette (luontoon.fi).
A foreign company can place an order in the company's name only as an unregistered customer.
When a company regularly takes its customers to destinations with hiking infrastructure maintained by Metsähallitus, it must have a cooperation agreement. Read more in the information bank for entrepreneurs.
Maximum length of reservation is 3 nights. There is a separate fee for using the sauna, which can be paid in advance when making the hut reservation.

The hut is accessible only by foot or by skiing. Use of motor vehicles in the area is prohibited. There are no marked winter trails to the hut.
In summer time, there are several possible starting points from Savukoski direction, close to Tulppio. You can get by car to Tulppionkaitavaara, to the north part of Turjalaiset or Ahmatunturi. The roads are forest roads and can be in poor condition.
It is 18 km from Tulppio to Härkätunturi via the UKK-trail.
In the winter, the road is maintained to Ainijärvi, 15 km further from Tulppio, where the road ends. Please do not park your car in a way that obstructs the snowplow.
From Salla direction, you can get to the hut by walking 23 km north from Tuntsa. You can leave the car at the Tuntsa cooking shelter near Tuntsajoki river. Please note that the road is in very poor condition.
Read more about the area and more detailed arrival instructions on Luontoon.fi.
A wood heated sauna, a campfire site, a dry toilet and a wood shed.
The key is in a key code box on the site's wall. The box is protected with a code. Instructions and the code are sent to you by e-mail after the payment.
Take lock de-icer with you just in case the box's lid is stuck due to frost. Metsähallitus does not have maintenance on site.
The hut has a stove and firewood for heating. Please use firewood sparingly. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.
The hut has no electricity. We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.
Gas cooker and necessary cooking utensils.
Bring your own utensils and tableware.
There is no running water in the hut.
In summer, take the water from the spring, and in winter from the nearby brook. It is recommended to boil water from natural sources before consumption. Water quality is not tested. Drink water taken directly from nature at your own risk.
See tips on how to obtain safe drinking water on a hike (luontoon.fi).
Mattresses, pillows and blankets.
Please bring your own linen or a sleeping bag.
A shared rental hut is a shared overnight accommodation where hikers sleep in the same space, usually shoulder-to-shoulder in bunk beds.
The sauna is in a separate building.
The sauna fee is 12 € / person. Payment in advance on Eraluvat.fi. Sauna fees include 25,5% VAT.
The sauna cannot be reserved for private use.
Instructions for the sauna keys and sauna use will be sent by email after the sauna fee has been paid.
There is a dry toilet near the site. Please bring your own toilet paper.
There are no waste containers by the site. Visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.
Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (luontoon.fi).
Please note that trespassing or hiking is not allowed in the Värriö Strict Nature Reserve, which is located near the hut. Read more about Strict Nature Reserves (metsa.fi).
There are no accessible services in the hut.
Please clean the hut before you leave.
Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.
There are fire alarms at wilderness huts, but we recommend to bring a 9 V battery and/or your own travel fire alarm with you.
Each user of the site is responsible for keeping the site clean. The site does not have regular maintenance.
Please note that Metsähallitus sites are wilderness‑like and modest, and the indoor areas may contain, for example, insects, rodents, and their droppings.
