Säkkisalo Hut (with a large main room, kitchen and chamber) is a rental hut located on the south‑western shore of the island of Iso Säkkisalo, in the middle of Lake Puula (Puulavesi), a large lake in the South Savo region. The hut was originally built in 1952 as a forestry workers’ cabin and has been renovated over the years for recreational use.
A rental hut is a place for an overnight stay that can be rented for only your use.

Iso Säkkisalo hut is located on an island. The tenant must arrange their own boat transport from the mainland to the island. Further information can be obtained from the hut maintenance.
Road distances to the nearest harbour (Lutakonlahti, Väisälänsaari, Hirvensalmi): the water crossing to the island is 4 km, either by your own boat or with the hut host’s cruise boat. Distances by road are 45 km to Kangasniemi, 45 km to Mikkeli, 31 km to Otava and 25 km to Hirvensalmi.
Alternative harbours include Kangasniemi, Ukonniemi, Läsäkoski, Käräjäniemi, Otava, Vintinniemi, Mainiemi and the harbour in Hirvensalmi village. From all of these locations, the island can be reached either by your own boat or together with the hut host.
When approaching the hut by motorboat, arrive from the north via Simpiänselkä, south of Otonsaaren island, passing between the rocky islet located north of Otonsaaren and Hietasaaren islands. Please note that there is a large rock immediately south of the jetty, so care must be taken when approaching the landing.
By rowing boat or canoe, the hut can be approached from the south, east of Hietasaaren island, directly to the jetty or shore.
The sauna and washing facilities are located in a separate, wood‑heated sauna building.
There is a storage building, which also contains a dry toilet.
By the shore there is a campfire site, a rowing boat and a jetty.
The sauna shore has a gently sloping, shallow beach. Another shallow shoreline is located on the opposite side of the yard area.
The yard and its buildings are for the exclusive use of the renter.
You will receive instructions about the keys closer to your booking by contacting the cabin host Seppo Lappalainen, Puula Tours (puulatours.fi, in Finnish), seppo.lappalainen(at)puulatours.fi, phone +358 400 570557.
The hut has a stove and firewood for heating. Please use firewood sparingly. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.
The hut has no electricity. We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.
A gas‑powered refrigerator and cooking hob are provided, along with basic cookware, crockery and cutlery for food preparation and dining.
There is no running water in the hut.
Household water is taken from the lake. It is recommended to boil water from natural sources before consumption. Water quality is not tested. Drink water taken directly from nature at your own risk.
See tips on how to obtain safe drinking water on a hike (luontoon.fi).
The bunk beds in the hut provide sleeping places for six people, and the chamber has sleeping places for two. Mattresses and blankets are provided.
Please bring your own linen or a sleeping bag.
In the yard area, there is a spacious sauna by a sandy beach.
There is a dry toilet near the site. Please bring your own toilet paper.
There are no waste containers by the site. Visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.
Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (luontoon.fi).
Please clean the hut before you leave.
When a wild fire warning is in effect, open fires may only be lit indoors in the hut, not at the outdoor campfire site.
The hut does not have accessible facilities.
Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.
Huts are equipped with smoke detectors, but we recommend that you bring your own smoke detector. An increasing number of huts have smoke detectors with long-life batteries that cannot be replaced by visitors. The battery is replaced by the hut maintenance staff.
Each user of the site is responsible for keeping the site clean. The site does not have regular maintenance.
Please note that Metsähallitus sites are wilderness‑like and modest, and the indoor areas may contain, for example, insects, rodents, and their droppings.
