Renovation of habitats
Metsähallitus uses the revenues earned from permit sales for the management of fishing waters, securing fishing opportunities and, among other things, communications.
Together with its partners, Metsähallitus invests hundreds of thousands of euros annually in the management of fishing waters. Running waters are restored by, for example, creating new gravel spawning beds, diversifying the structure of riverbeds or restoring the flow of water to a dry channel. The 30,000 hectares of mires restored by Metsähallitus also enhances water conservation at the catchment area level.
Guides for water management and protection
The Water Management Guide directs Metsähallitus in the use, management and protection of water bodies and habitats that have a significant impact on their condition. The guide provides information on aquatic nature and the principles of water management, as well as instructions and examples for preventing watercourse loading, improving the condition of aquatic habitats and protecting species.
In addition to the Water Management Guide, the Environmental Guide of Metsähallitus Forestry Ltd. explains how water protection and fish stocks are taken into account in the day-to-day management of state-owned forests.
