Fishing arrangements at Lake Matildanjärvi will change in April 2026
Metsähallitus will end the stocking of rainbow trout in Lake Matildanjärvi, located in Teijo National Park, at the end of 2025. However, the sale of fishing permits and supervision will continue as usual until the end of March 2026. Starting from April 2026, fishing at Matildanjärvi will be allowed under general fishing rights, meaning hook and line fishing, ice fishing, and fishing with one rod and lure (e.g. spinning) after paying the fisheries management fee. In the future, fishing will be based on the lake’s natural fish stocks.
During the update of the management and use plan for Teijo National Park, the future of fishing was also discussed. Fishing at Matildanjärvi has mainly relied on catch-sized rainbow trout, which have been regularly stocked in the lake. This so called stock and fish model has had its supporters, but unfortunately the "guaranteed catch" of rainbow trout has attracted anglers who do not wish to follow the agreed rules. Disruptive behavior and unauthorized fishing have strained Metsähallitus’ limited wilderness supervision resources. Rainbow trout is also a non-native species, and its use in stocking has decreased over time.
No decision has yet been made regarding the rental boats at Matildanjärvi. The matter will be resolved during autumn 2025.
