The area surrounding the Ruunaa Rapids offers tremendous experiences in nature with its hiking trails, lodging services and rafting opportunities. The great fishing experiences of Ruunaa Rapids are accessible to all anglers from beginner to pro. 

Ruunaa is situated 30 kilometres east from Lieksa. The rapids are situated in the Ruunaa Camping Area and they stretch from the headwaters of Paasikoski to below Siikakoski. Ruunaa is a destination that can be taken in with the entire family, a group of friends or by your lonesome. All nature enthusiasts are sure to find something interesting in the pristine landscape of Ruunaa.

  • All persons under 18 years of age receive a 50% discount on the permits.
  • Persons under 15 years of age are allowed to share the same fishing quota, with the permission of their parent or legal guardian. For fishers under 15 years of age who intend to fish alone, a one week's fishing permit is available free of charge at the Eräluvat online store.
  •  A family permit is also available for this destination. In this context, a family consists of children under 18 years of age and their parents/legal guardians. Married couples and couples in a civil union may also purchase family permits. The family permit costs twice as much and its fishing quota is twice as large.

most common payment methods.



Metsähallitus' fishing licences may also be purchased by phone. The service is open on
weekdays from 9 AM to 4 PM.



As of 1 January 2020, mobile permits are no longer available. This is due to mobile network operator’s decision not to provide the current service anymore.

Regional licensing terms

Calendar year.
  • All fishing in the area requires the Ruunaa angling permit 7525. The permit grants the right to lure fishing (lure, fly, jig) in rapids and running waters. In lakes you can also hook and line fish and ice fish after purchasing the angling permit.
  • General fishing rights (hook and line fishing, ice fishing, lure fishing under the fisheries management fee) do not apply in rapids and running waters.
  • Only barbless hooks are allowed.
  • The number of hooks is limited to three. The lure can have one treble hook, three single hooks or one single hook and one double hook. 
  • The use of bait paste, silicone balls and natural baits such as grubs, worms or bait fish is prohibited in the rapids and other running waters. In lakes using these baits is permitted.
  • Each angler may use one (1) rod and line, which must remain within the angler's reach at all times (max 2 metres away). When trolling without a motor, each angler is allowed 2 rods or lines.
  • Leaving the rod to fish by itself is prohibited. 
  • The use of a motor boat for fishing is allowed only on the lakes between the rapids.
  • In rapids and running waters it is allowed to use a row boat but anchoring a boat is prohibited. Using a satellite anchor is not allowed.
  • Wading is prohibited from 1 September to 31 May.


  • In the stretch between Paasikoski and Mutikaisenkari fishing in prohibited from 1 September to 30 November.
  • In the lakes Neitijärvi and Kattilampi fishing is permitted also with the angling permit for Southern Finland 7413. In these lakes also the general fishing rights (hook and line fishing, ice fishing, lure fishing under the fisheries management fee) apply, and do not require an angling permit.

The right to fish ends when the angler has caught enough fish to fulfil the permit's fishing quota. The angler can catch up to 3 salmonids / day. The catch quota for 24 hours remains the same regardless of number of permits.

Once you have finished fishing, you must submit a catch report at All caught and released fish must also be reported.

The best way to reach the destination is to take the Lieksa-Ilomantsi road where there are signs guiding people to the western bank of Ruunaa and the Ruunaa Hiking Centre at Neitikoski

Fisheries management

Paasikoski-Mutikaisenkari: These upper rapids of Ruunaa are natural stock zones that are stocked with fry-sized trout and, on occasion, catch-sized trout.

Neitikoski, Murrookoski and Siikakoski Rapids, Lakes Kattilajärvi and Murroojärvi: Regular recreational fishing areas into which catch-sized trout and rainbow trout are planted regularly throughout the summer season.
