Mikkelin Valkea 7552

The clear-watered Lake Valkeajärvi is located in South Savo, near the city of Mikkeli, and it is 14 hectares in size. The most sought-after fish in Lake Valkeajärvi are chubby whitefish and rainbow trout, which is planted into the lake catch-sized 1-3 times a month. The most popular fishing methods at the lake are ice fishing in winter and fly fishing in late summer and early autumn.

Valkeajärvi has two campfire sites and a partially duckboarded trail that goes around the lake. Thanks to its accessibility and easy terrain, Valkeajärvi is the ideal destination for all kinds of fishers and nature enthusiasts.

Purchasing a permit

In Mikkelin Valkea angling permit area, the customer can choose between a 3-hour or 24-hour permit. The prices for angling permits are as follows:

Persons under 18 years of age pay half price for the angling permit.

Persons under 15 years of age may fish under the angling permit and within the fishing quota of an adult belonging to the same party, without needing to purchase an angling permit of their own. 

A family may purchase a family permit, which costs twice as much and has a fishing quota twice as large as an individual angling permit. A family consists of children under 18 years of age and their parents/legal guardians as well as married and common-law couples.

What does the permit entitle the holder to

All visitors fishing in Mikkelin Valkea angling permit area must obtain Mikkelin Valkea (7552) angling permit.

As general fishing rights do not apply in Lake Valkeajärvi, it is prohibited to fish there with a lure under a fisheries management fee as well as fish with a rod and line (hook and line fishing), and through a hole in the ice in wintertime (ice fishing), unless you have purchased an angling permit. The Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY) has issued the decision on restricting general fishing rights.

Mikkelin Valkea (7552) angling permit grants the right to lure fishing (lure, fly, jig), hook and line fishing and ice fishing. 

Fishing gear and watercraft

Lake Valkeajärvi is divided into two sections: north and south. Different permit terms apply to each section with regard to fishing tackle and watercraft. The boundary between the two sections runs between the large and small basin, and is marked on the permit area map.

South Lake Valkeajärvi, i.e. large basin

During the ice-free period, an angler may use one (1) rod with a single line. The rod must be held in the angler’s hand or be within reach at all times (no more than 2 metres away). The rod may not be left alone for fishing.

During the ice-free period, only synthetic lures may be used in south Lake Valkeajärvi. Bait paste, silicone balls and natural baits (e.g. worms, grubs, shrimp or bait fish) are prohibited.

You may use a flotation device for fishing in south Lake Valkeajärvi. The use of boats is prohibited.

When fishing from the ice, one angler can use at maximum two (2) rods, each one with a single line. One of these may be a passive rod (left alone for fishing). The passive rod may be no more than 10 metres away from the angler. To fish from the ice with one active and one passive rod, an angler aged between 18 and 69 years must pay the fisheries management fee.  Fishers who have reached the age of 65 or more by 31 December 2023 are an exception: they do not have to pay the fisheries management fee.

Natural baits, bait paste and silicone balls may also be used when fishing from the ice.

North Lake Valkeajärvi, i.e. small basin

All types of synthetic lures, bait paste, silicone balls and natural baits (e.g. worms, grubs, shrimp and bait fish) may be used in north Lake Valkeajärvi.

One angler can use at maximum two (2) rods, each one with a single line. One of these may be a passive rod (left alone for fishing). The passive rod may be no more than 10 metres away from the angler. Catch quotas

The size of the catch quota depends on the validity of the permit. The maximum number of fish that an angler may catch is indicated in the table below:

There is no fishing quota limit for other fish species.

A 24-hour catch quota cannot be increased by purchasing multiple licenses for the same 24-hour period.

Services in the area

The area's services consist of a 2.2 km long trail with duckboards, 2 campfire sites, a lean-to shelter and a dry closet.

Signs guiding to the lake may be found along the Mikkeli-Pieksämäki and Ihastjärventie roads. 

Fisheries management

The lake is stocked with catch-sized rainbow trout total 4 times on March and April, and every 2-3 weeks from May to October as well as before christmas.
