The fisheries management fee for 2021 came on sale in early November. Many people took up fishing for the first time this past summer, and revenue from the fisheries management fees has exceeded EUR 10 million. Metsähallitus encourages people to ensure the continuity of this hobby that brings people close to nature by paying the fisheries management fee as a gift for Father's Day and Christmas, thereby giving the right to fish through the entire new calendar year.
The fisheries management fee entitles the holder to fish using one lure in almost all parts of the country in waterways where fishing has not been restricted. Many fishing enthusiasts pay the fisheries management fee for the entire calendar year as soon as it comes on sale. The fisheries management fee has also become a popular gift item that enhances the well-being of its recipient and nature, especially for those looking for last-minute gifts. The busiest day for sales last year was December 23, when more than half of all fisheries management fees that were paid were for persons other than the payers themselves.
In this exceptional year, the value of the fisheries management fee as a gift was enhanced by its risk-free nature. The gift can be bought on-line, and the receipt can be delivered to the recipient by e-mail even when a face-to-face meeting is not possible. The greater diversity in profiles of fishing enthusiasts has been considered on the Eräluvat.fi website by offering Father's Day and Christmas cards appropriate for different recipients that can be attached to the receipt.
“The fees help maintain opportunities for fishing, and responsible fishers want to do their part to secure the maintenance of fishing waters. Even for those who are over the age of 65, paying the fisheries management fee is a good way to maintain the hobby of fishing and the relationship that the younger generation has with nature”, says Jukka Bisi, Director of Wildlife Service Finland at Metsähallitus.
Under the Fishing Act, a fisheries management fee must be paid by everyone between the ages of 18 and 64 who fish, except for ice fishing, angling, or using a herring rig. The fee can be paid for a day, a week, or the entire calendar year.
The fisheries management fee for 2021 can be paid through the on-line at the Metsähallitus website at www.eraluvat.fi, by telephone at +358 20 69 2424, at Metsähallitus Nature Centres and at R Kiosks.
The fisheries management fee for 2021 will come on sale through the Eräluvat mobile app later, at a time to be announced on the Eräluvat web page. Fisheries management fees paid using the app can only be used by the owner of the mobile device.
Fisheries management fees for 2020 are on sale through all sales channels until 10 December, after which daily or weekly fees can be paid to cover the remainder of the year.
Metsähallitus collects the fisheries management fees and passes them on to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The Ministry and the ELY Centres allocate funds for the planning and sustainable development and management of fishing waters, monitoring of fishing activity, promotion of recreational fishing, advisory services for the fisheries sector, the activities of fisheries areas and compensation to water area owners.
