Metsähallitus does not sell fishing permits for Vetsijoki River or Utsjoki River this year.
The shallow and fast-flowing Vetsijoki River begins in Lake Vetsijärvi and runs into Tana River. For most parts, Vetsijoki is situated in Kaldoaivi wilderness area. It stretches for some 30 kilometres, and the difference in elevation between the upper reaches of Vetsijoki and Tana River is over 200 metres. There are few quiet waters or lake-like deep spots.
Vetsijoki is an important spawning river for salmon in the Arctic Ocean. The efforts to safeguard and grow the river's salmon stocks are based on having an adequate spawning stock and limiting the number of fishing permits. Fishing in the river is regulated with permit terms and the rules defined for tributary waters.
There is no permanent inhabitation in the permit area with the exception of vacation homes on private lands.
The number of this permit area will change in 2024. The new number is 1324.

The number of angling permits is limited. Please check the availability of permits prior to your trip.
There are hundred (100) 12-hour fishing permits available for Vetsijoki angling permit area. A maximum of six (6) persons can purchase an angling permit for the same day.
If you have ordered your permit by phone during the advance sale period, you must ensure that the permit is paid for in full by the due date indicated on the invoice.
Permit price and validity
Vetsijoki angling permit costs 20 euros per 12 hours. Validity of a permit begins at 7:00 AM or 7:00 PM.
Persons under 18 years of age can buy the angling permit at half price.
Persons under 15 years of age may fish under the angling permit and within the fishing quota of an adult belonging to the same party, without needing to purchase an angling permit of their own.
A family may purchase a family permit, which costs twice as much and has a fishing quota twice as large as an individual angling permit. A family consists of children under 18 years of age and their parents or legal guardians as well as married and common-law couples.

Metsähallitus' fishing permits may also be purchased by phone. The service is open on
weekdays from 9 AM to 3 PM.

Permit terms for the area

There is a weekly protection period of 24 hours. During this period all fishing is prohibited. The protection period starts on Sundays at 7 PM and ends on Mondays at 7 PM.
Water areas and regional restrictions that are included in this angling permit
Vetsijoki angling permit entitles you to fish only in the area designated on the permit area map. There are also private waters and other water areas where fishing is prohibited, and Vetsijoki angling permit does not entitle you to fish in these water areas.
Anglers must check the borders of the permit area on the permit area map.
Fishing gear, bait and waste
Lures and flies are permitted.
In the municipalities of Upper Lapland (incl. the Vetsijoki angling permit area) it is prohibited to use bait fish when hook and line fishing, ice fishing or lure fishing. This is to prevent the spread of the Gyrodactylys salaris parasite. To prevent the spread of other parasites, it is recommended to bury the waste after gutting the fish you have caught.
To prevent the spread of the Gyrodactylys salaris parasite, all fishing gear brought in from outside Vetsijoki angling permit area must be completely dry upon arrival or they must be disinfected at a disinfection station before you start fishing. If requested, a proof of disinfection must be presented to the fishing supervisor. Proof of disinfection is provided by the following disinfection stations:

These actions to stop the Gyrodactylys salaris parasite are based on the decree by the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Catch quotas
The maximum number of fish that an angler may catch is indicated in the table below:

There is no catch quota limit for other fish species.
Metsähallitus recommends catching humpback salmon and chum salmon.

Services in the area
There are no marked trails, maintained campfire sites or open or rental wilderness huts in the area.
Please note
The permit area begins some two kilometres upstream from the mouth of the river and the Utsjoki-Nuorgam road.
There are privately owned waters and lands in the area and traversing across these is not recommended. Cars should not be parked along roads or entryways leading to private lands.
